Summary: How to install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from Mac, and remove adware or malware that has been maliciously installed on OS X.
If the web browsers on your Mac are suddenly injecting advertisements into web pages, causing pop-up windows or tabs to open to advertising sites, and changing your home page and/or search engine, your Mac has been infected with adware or malware.
Adware is unwanted software that uses sneaky and dishonest methods to get installed on your computer, and then changes the behavior of your web browser. Once installed, it does things like injecting advertisements into web pages, causing pop-up windows or tabs to open to advertising sites, and changing your home page and/or search engine.
Malware, short for malicious software, is any software used to disrupt computer operations, gather sensitive information, gain access to private computer systems, or display unwanted advertising. Malware is defined by its malicious intent, acting against the requirements of the computer user, and does not include software that causes unintentional harm due to some deficiency.
To remove maliciously installed adware or malware, download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for Mac. To install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, drag the application to the Applications folder (Macintosh HD > Applications).
Once Malwarebytes is installed, launch the application (from Macintosh HD > Applications), and click the Scan button.
This will scan your computer for known adware/malware. This scan will take a few minutes to complete, and will show a progress bar as it runs. If any malicious software is detected, Malwarebytes will show a window similar to the following...
In most cases, you want to remove everything that is automatically checked. Review everything that is checked to ensure no important files are selected, and click the Remove Selected Adware button to remove. Malwarebytes will remove the adware/malware from your Mac.
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware may recommend that you restart your computer after removing any found adware/malware. Best practice is to restart, then follow the steps to scan your computer again to ensure all malicious software has been removed.
Once no adware/malware is found, Malwarebytes will display a window saying No adware found!
Your Mac should now be adware/malware free. If you are continuing to have problems, bring your computer to Information Services so it can be looked at.
